A good ol' fashioned yoga retreat

Remember how good it feels to flow together?

Yoga in a group with a collective breath hits different. Sure, we've all had a great pandemic time getting to know our home practice, but damn if it didn't used to feel good to share space in a yoga class. Let's find that good ol' feeling with some bomb music, seamless flows, and the deep savasana you have to earn to appreciate.

We've all spent a lot of time over the past two years in a frenetic head space -- it's time to get back into our bodies, get grounded, find a breath, and maybe do a shot of tequila while we're at it.

SAY NO MORE - SIGN ME UP

(with the attention to detail you'd expect from MFR)

Maybe you haven't been to a legit yoga class since before the the pandemic. Or maybe you dipped your toe back in a couple times but that euphoric post-yoga glow wasn't there yet. Maybe you showed up, didn't really know anyone in the room, went through your normal updogs and downdogs, but it just didn't land the same way.

Once upon a time, you'd show up to a yoga class, hug the teacher, chat with your friends who always took class at the same time slot, the music would turn on and you'd sink in. You'd feel your breath expand, match the inhale of the person on the mat next to you, and the combination of breath and flow would put you deep in your bones. Ah, simpler times.

There's been a palpable switch in how frenetic our attention has become as a culture. The pandemic glued us to our phones, turned us all into virologists, and then historians, and then psychologists. There's no way around it -- These are anxious times.

As our time in isolation came to close, we found the joy of hugging those nearest and dearest to us, sharing a table again with our closest friends. But still, we haven't seen as much of the friendly stranger, the yogi cracking a joke on the mat next to you, the quick wit of the person at the coffeeshop... we haven't fully come out of shells yet. We kind of miss each other, right?

Come back to your kula, a sanskrit word meaning "community." The folks that keep you accountable to do the next flow and take the next breath. When we're at home practicing online, it's too tempting to just click off when the movement gets too challenging or another round of breath sounds too monotonous to hold our attention. We say that was enough, at least I did something and move on with our day. Remember when we used to push through those barriers together and come out the other side as better versions of ourselves? When we flow together with our kula, we lean on each other, and that rising tide lifts all our boat poses.

For this unique Moveable Feast Retreat, Tim will be teaming up with Michelle of Pulse Yoga Collective (who you already know if you've ever been to a Feast in the past), to provide twice daily 90 minute practices on top of a slightly pared down version of our normal Moveable Feast offering. Yes, the food will be bomb. Yes, you'll dive into the complexities of tequila and mezcal. Yes, to exploring the mysticism of local Mayan culture. But the centerpoint of this trip is the joy of your time on the mat, getting deep into your body, and exploring the elegance of our body/mind.

Here’s what you’ll be up to:

Yoga has been a component of every Feast to date, but this is the first where it takes center stage.

Tim and Michelle are kindred yoga spirits who have been flowing together for over a decade, carefully curating their own movement style. They're dedicated to the art of intelligent sequencing that feels like the movement your body was born to do. It's medicine as movement. The way we move is the way we live-- let's be stronger and freer.

Your twice daily yoga classes will run the gamut of the yoga asana experience. Some upbeat heart poundy flows. Workshops to learn the energetic alignments of deeper postures. And moments of deep restoration to remind you what a clear moment feels like.

The Yoga

Nestled in the heart of Tulum town, away from the traffic and high prices of the beach, is our collection of traditional cabanas with all modern amenities. Yes, they're air conditioned. Outdoor showers, hammocks galore, jungle vibes, a short walk to chic shops in town, and a short scooter ride to a dip in the ocean. Don't worry about a long trip to class as our yoga pagoda is right on site.

And of course, there's a cooler full of coronas waiting poolside.

The Lodging

Barriga llena, corazón contento.
(Full stomach, happy heart.)

Historically and geographically, Yucátecan cuisine is a world apart from Mexico. Smoke, fire, spice, citrus, cacao, vanilla — all come together to make a cuisine that is rooted in Maya, and then blend that with what European contact brought to the table - garbanzos, olive oil, vinegar, black pepper, olives, almonds - only then do you get a fuller picture of Yucátecan cuisine.

We’re gonna eat things cooked in pits. We’re gonna eat handmade masa tortillas. We’re going to get unapologetically local. The result will be a melange of ancient flavors with modern sensibility blended together on your plate, a history lesson and a voyage for tastebuds all in one.

The Food

Ever tried Xtabentun? You will. This isn’t some back alley rice whisky. This is a liquor with a history as old as wine.

I mean, of course there’ll be tequila and cerveza. But we’ll redefine the margarita Yucatecan style, made with local cardamom and black pepper. Not your first choice? That's ok, we've got a coconut with a straw with your name on it.

As far as bebidas go, we got you covered.

The Drink

Although we'll be footsteps from Tulum town and a short ride to the center of beach culture in Tulum, we'll also explore some of the hidden treasures the Yucatàn has to offer from secluded Cenotes to far-off Mayan ruins. We've been visiting the Yucatàn nearly every year for over a decade and have found lots of hidden adventures along the way.

Out and About

But what will we do all day?

A good day of travel, for us, is when move our body, discover new foods, meet interesting people, and take a moment to be extremely present in an unfamiliar place. We want you to come home from your travels with a deeper sense of a place, an appreciation for the small details that can go unseen when you travel at a breakneck pace. We’ve also been listening carefully to what you want more of from MFR, so you can expect:

I'm traveling solo.
How does the room situation work?

We love solo travelers. On past trips, about 50% of Feasters are those traveling by themselves.

If you're joining us solo, you've got two options:

1. Before the trip, we send out questionnaires to get to know our Feasters. Once we get an idea of personalities and travel styles, we'll match you with your new travel bestie. There are limited spots for room with two beds so get on it quick!

2. Wanting more of a solo experience? Book an entire room to yourself and you can starfish in your giant bed all week.

The three step "don't regret your life" Feast Plan

1. Reserve your spot with 50% down.

2. We’ll send you everything you need to know– what to pack, what to expect, and a style guide– one month before departure. Final payment is due January 15.

3. You meet us at the Cancun airport on the 2nd!
